Meetup.com, Foursquare.com, Tumblr.com are huge NYC startups.

IAC & Google have a strong presence and are heavily involved in the tech scene in NYC despite not having started there.

Every night there’s a tech event and every month there are countless Startup-centric Meetups involving NYC based tech companies.

So where are you getting that there are no tech entrepreneurs.

There are several amazing coworking spaces and incubators like nwc.co, Sunshine Suites, Dogpatch Labs and even Techstars created a NYC chapter due to popular demand.

I live on the West Coast now after the NYC based VoIP company I worked for was bought by a California tech company who couldn’t build a superior product after trying for several years.

I ran a tech Meetup with over 900 members (which was small for NYC) and every month some amazing people would come out and share what they were building.

Sites like Etsy, Postling.com and Foursquare came from those NYC roots and reside there today.

Geography has it’s pros and cons but it’s what YOU’RE made of that determines success.

Oh and it’s pretty smart to post on a topic that has been debated to death knowing you’ll get a shit ton of traffic. I fell for it.

Carbon-based automatons like yourself do well at GS. Revel in the irony that your asking such a question precludes you from ever appreciating the answer. Funny too, that you should mention people in “lesser fortunate areas” wanting to be in “shiny goldman shoes,” considering how peoples lack of actual shoes in some parts of the world are a direct result of Goldman activities. Lemme guess…wannabe trader, right?

Mixed feelings about the news. Certainly happy for you guys but adgrok looked like an interesting tool with some potential. While I wish I would have heard about adgrok sooner so I could have given it a spin, after reading that you are shutting it down to go to work for Twitter, I’m glad I did not.

Every time one of these startups leaves their customers hanging like this, it makes those customers less likely to trust the next startup that comes around. If you’re shutting down, at least have some other reason than you think it is somehow a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be employed by twitter. It is not like twitter is without an HR department. If the company failed, fine, say so, and you’ll generate some good will. Personally, I’m just glad I didn’t become a customer (though I nearly did.)

I think that, once you get there, people respond in different ways. You either a) realize that you can’t live without the new money you’ve accrued, or b) realize that this money doesn’t mean as much as you thought it would. It doesn’t hurt that he has some savings probably from working at Goldman, but ultimately it looks like a personal decision. He’d much rather be working on something he’s passionate about than make that money, and he’s simply sharing it here for others with similar views to contemplate.

One quick question about the example and rough numbers, wouldn’t the $250K increase their probability of success by 33%, because they now have 33% more time (3 years, instead of 2) or am I missing something ?

I love the personal story.

Companies usually don’t fail because they run out of customers, they fail because they run out of cash. Whether you realize it or not, the first job of any Founder is keeping the company funded long enough to achieve its next milestone. That means having laser focus on your cash and your cash burn.

Numbers don’t lie. They will catch up to you if you don’t pay attention to them.

This is a very helpful list but you should clarify that you’re describing an investor-funded burn-only model, which is only one chapter on starting a business in the Startup Economics 101 text book.
